Map of HSI Asia's Efforts in India and Pakistan

18 November 2005
HSI has been
working in India on both disaster relief efforts and on launching
long term animal welfare programs. In addition, we are
preparing to go into Pakistan or organize a response effort the wake
of the devastating earthquake.
The above map tracks the
efforts in the region. In mid-October HSI went in to help the
Visakha SPCA on the Bay of Bengal. Medical teams were brought
in from Sri Lanka and other regions in India. to assist with the
rescue of animals stranded by the typhoon floods.
HSI also funded efforts to rebuild the destroyed animal care
facilities.
In November, HSI
began negotiations with the government to launch a large scale dog
sterilization program in Ahmedbad, one of India's major cities.
This will be HSI biggest sustainable project in the region.
As we are writing this,
Sherry Grant, Director HSI Asia, is trying to get into Pakistan to evaluate
an HSI response to the massive earthquake. Unfortunately she has run
into repeated visa problems. But Sherry is an old hand at third-world
bureaucracy and rough conditions. So we are confident that she'll get
there some how.
