December 2004
Swathi Buddhiraju of
the Visakha SPCA in Visakhapatnam and Chinny Krishna of the Blue Cross of
India in Chennai have called, Pradeep Kumar Nath of the Visakha SPCA and
Debasis Chakrabati of the Compassionate Crusaders Trust in Kolkata have
e-mailed, and so far as they can tell, all of the animal people in India
are alive, well, and busy with the aftermath of the disaster.
The Compassionate
Crusaders' Ashari educational center and rescue facility had some extra
water, but no damage, and none of the others reported any damage.
Champa Fernando is
the only Sri Lankan to check in so far. Champa lives high on a hill in
Colombo. According to Champa, communications are totally disrupted, and my
assistant Cathy Czapla and I have both observed that the Sri Lankan news
media actually seem to have less information than some outside news media
who have correspondents there with cell telephones, radios, etc. Their
reporters may have a ton of info, but no way to get it relayed to
headquarters.
Most of the Soi Dog
Rescue people in Phuket, Thailand, are okay, including Margot Park and
John and Gill Dalley. Gill suffered double amputation of her legs due to
acute septicemia in October, and is still recovering.
The Soi Dog Rescue
center is now sheltering numerous displaced humans as well as dogs.
Unfortunately,
Phuket Animal Welfare Society cofounder and board member Leone Cosens was
killed, apparently while trying to rescue others.
We have heard
nothing as yet from the affected parts of Indonesia.
