About HSIAsia

HSIAsia is a division of Humane Society International (HSI), the international branch of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), one of the largest and oldest animal welfare organizations in the world.

Founded in 1954, The HSUS envisions a world in which people satisfy the physical and emotional needs of domestic animals; protect wild animals and their environments; and change their relationships with all animals, evolving from exploitation and harm to respect and compassion

.

In the years since its founding, The HSUS has grown into one of the world's largest animal-protection organization, currently drawing on the support of our seven million members all over the world. The HSUS has expanded to include ten regional offices, four affiliates, an international arm (HSI), and 250 staff members - including veterinarians, wildlife biologists, lawyers, animal behaviorists, and other professionals.

The HSUS and HSI work to relief the suffering of all animals -  companion animals such as dogs and cats, wildlife, animals raised for food, working animals, marine animals, and animals used in research.

Animals are an important part of our environment and their existence depends to large extent on the preservation of that environment.  Therefore HSI takes a comprehensive approach to animal welfare.  Our programs cover not only direct animal assistance, but also habitat preservation and rehabilitation, alternative economic development for native populations, and public education.

HSI feels that even in cases where animals are raised for food, that they deserve to be treated in a manner which minimizes their suffering and pain.  All animals deserve our respect as feeling beings that are a part of this eco-system we call earth.

The HSUS and HSI speak for animals in global forums, having been officially recognized by the United Nations to negotiate for animals. We believe in the possibility of a humane society, a world in which both animals and humans live harmoniously. The HSUS and HSI are dedicated to protecting animals because it's not just our world—it's their world, too.

HSIAsia works for the protection of animals in Asia.  We support programs in the region and speak for Asia's unique biodiversity.  Some of the last remaining rain forest are in this region.  Asia is a special place in animal welfare work, because many of the last remaining members of near extinct species live here.  The front line in the worldwide fight for animal protection is right here in Asia.

Tips from Dr. Wong

"Humane" is a difficult word to translate into other languages.  It means treating animals and humans in a manner which recognizes the dignity of life and treats them in a manner which we would wish to be treated ourselves.
